Andy Clements has announced that he is stepping down at the end of 2020. He says that it was his intention to step down in October, probably on St Crispin’s day I guess, but coronavirus has pushed that date back a bit.
Andy has been and for a few months will continue to be, a very fine BTO CEO – at once both a radical and a traditionalist.
His 13 years at the helm have been successful ones for the BTO despite these having been difficult times for all NGOs.
I’d say that his greatest achievement has been in making the BTO a more outgoing organisation, reaching out to more birders and young naturalists, than ever before, and growing the membership, whilst keeping grumpy old stalwarts more or less happy too.
The rest of 2020 may well be difficult months for the BTO, because of the external environment, but it’s obvious that the organisation has grown in confidence under Andy and made its place in the hearts and minds of serious bird enthusiasts even more secure.
