Amendments

There is a widespread belief among the population as a whole that MPs are ignorant wastrels. So give me your views on these proposed amendments to the Environment Bill, please.

How far did you get?

There is a lot of good stuff in here, little of which will probably get adopted by government.

Did you get to pages 57 and 58? No, I thought maybe not…

Good suggestions on lead ammunition here – what chance government will accept these amendments? They should with the wholehearted support of shooting organisations.

  1. Interesting to see a push to amend 30 year conservation covenants to ‘in perpetuity’. That amendment is going to go on an interesting little journey.

  2. I’d certainly hope an MP would get farther into these than me, they are paid enough to do so. It is quite literally their job to do so. If they don’t then ignorant wastrel doesn’t even begin to cover it. Asking them to do the bare minimum duties that their job requires doesn’t seem like something that needs praise, but whatever. To any Member of Parliament reading this who also read the Amendments and needs praise for it: Congratulations on meeting minimum standards required for your employment by British Public Inc.

    1. Was the suggestion that some MPs may not be ignorant wastrels (not exactly the highest praise!) made because they read through this document or because they authored these amendments to the Environment Bill (some of which, if adopted would achieve some benefit)?

  3. I presume that you are being ironic Mark given that a) the Gov has been deliberately kicking the bill into the long grass and b) they almost certainly won’t allow any meaningful amendments.

  4. Obviously it takes some time to properly work through these amendments but on the face of it they all seem very sensible and should be adopted. However I am sure the Government won’t do that. For them the bottom line is that Nature and Wildlife gets in their way. So it is all about power and having the power to do what they like including sweeping our wildlife away when it is in their way. (That’s why they took us out of the EU.). They want to grab this power and not let it go, so anything, like some of these amendments, that lessens that power in any way will be rejected.

  5. Earlier this week the government whipped its members into voting down an amendment to the Agriculture Bill that would have enshrined UK food safety and animal welfare standards in law despite a promise in their election manifesto to maintain these standards in any trade deal negotiations.

There certainly seem to be few grounds for optimism that the government will allow these amendments through either. There are very small numbers of rebels popping up on the Tory benches in response to some of the grotesqueries of the Cummins-Johnson crassocracy but far too few given the size of the majority. Most of these members are lobby fodder who would not step out of line for fearing of damaging their career prospects.

    1. Daniel – and this something they have done – the Opposition is attempting to change the Government’s planned legislation. That is DOING something.
