Songbird Survival looking for a CEO – no conservation knowledge or experience necessary

Here’s an opportunity to earn £50,000+ per annum leading an organisation with 1700 members which is the ‘voice for songbirds’. Membership is £20 per annum and of that almost £10 goes to the research fund. So membership subscriptions seem to fund only a third of the CEO salary at most.

According to the Charity Commission website Songbird Survival’s annual income is around £300,000 per annum so the CEO gets a fair chunk of that.

No mention in the job advert that you need to know anything about songbirds or nature conservation – despite the fact that commissioning science is a major part of the organisation’s work.

I wonder what Songbird Survival would claim as its greatest achievement in its 20 years of existence (I apologise for missing its birthday back in September).

  1. Must be the most useless post that has been advertised for a very long time.. If one is to do any good at all one must have conservation experience but then it is a useless organisation which is built on complete fallacies put forward by the shooting brigade. Perhaps that is why they don’t want any one with conservation experience for that would be too dangerous for the powers that be. However I dare say whoever the unfortunate person is to land the post he or she will at least land good wishes from the misguided. her and him of the royals.

  2. of course, if someone with the right attitude was to get the job, it just might become a very different organisation

  3. Company car, with doors that fall off included, but the successful applicant must supply their own red nose and spinning bow tie.

    1. It’s hugely satisfying that those who support the lying charlatans of SS find my comment offensive.

        1. Just who do you think you’re kidding? All real birders, naturalists and conservationists know that SS is simply a cover for vested interests who wish to demonise naturally occuring predators in order to justify their persecution. Bare-faced liars, the lot of them. Either you know that, or you’re just another mug who’s taken in by their fabrications.

        2. Really?

Do enlighten me on the achievements of this fantastic organisation as I’m struggling to think of any!

  4. A shabby organisation representing those who think predation is the major cause of songbird decline, when almost all research shows it isn’t, yet it is still their mantra. A good job for a failed Tory MP they seem to have little intellect, common sense or moral fibre.

  5. Just a quick snippet about Songbird Survival.

About 2.5 years ago there was a vagrant green heron on private land through which a public footpath ran. The land belonged to Simon Hart, Conservative M.P for South Pembrokeshire, and now Secretary of State for Wales. To be fair to him he had obviously created some excellent wildlife habitat on his land, he was pleasant to all the twitchers who turned up on his doorstep and his wife made us all some coffee!

As frequently happens at twitches (apparently) there was a tin left for donations – the beneficiary of which would be…….yes, Songbird Survival ! I’m not sure how many donations he got.

    1. Jeremy – thank you for your first comment here. I knew the heron was on his land but I hadn’t heard the collection tin story – thank you!
