All change at DEFRA

What a difference a month makes – see here for a blog about who does what in DEFRA.

Out: George Eustice (the real Cincinnatus of the regime change, returning to his farm), Zac Goldsmith (keeps his Foreign Office half-job but loses his environment role, despite the DEFRA website not having caught up with this change it appears), Victoria Prentis (to Work and Pensions) and Steve Double (out of government, he didn’t stay long, did he?).

In: Ranil Jayawardena, Mark Spencer and Trudy Harrison.

So, the only survivor is Lord Benyon.

It’s a strange way to run a country really, with many people sadly leaving jobs they didn’t really want and others sadly starting jobs which they didn’t really want either.

The environment, and probably farming, will be lower down the pecking order, though that is difficult to believe, after these changes. But then, those great former environment ministers, Liz Truss and Therese Coffey, are Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister respectively so there is nothing to fear.

  1. Not sorry to see George Eustice go . I think he lived up pretty close to his surname. Whether we will see any change in policy, such as a complete ban on using lead ammunition;, still setting fire to our peat lands; permissive shooting of wading birds in decline such as woodcock; decisive action on containing bird flue such as the banning of the release of imported pheasant poults, (the list just goes on and on) I doubt very much we will see much change.. My bet is that DEFRA will continue in the same old useless way as did the previous minister in charge.
