The question remains…

Who was instrumental in determining the wording of the press release which described Rowan, the Hen Harrier, as ‘likely to have been shot’ when, it appears, that all involved knew that it had been shot? For new readers see Raptor Persecution UK blogs here and here, and my blogs here and here.

Was it:

  • someone in the Hawk and Owl Trust – an NGO charity which is supposed to be on the side of the Hen Harrier and therefore might be expected to publicise clear news about the fate of these birds
  • someone in Natural England – a statutory agency which is supposed to work for all of us because we pay their salaries and which has responsibility for nature conservation in England
  • someone in Defra – the government department politically accountable for nature conservation in England but which seems to be in thrall to landowners
  • someone else
  • a wicked and malicious fairy who goes round changing press releases without their authors noticing?

Or maybe some combination of these potential characters? Who were the ‘likely’ lads?

When will the X-ray of Rowan be published?

  1. Whoever it was, either individually or as a group, you have to wonder why they appear to be protecting or at least trying not to upset the shooting fraternity. What are they afraid of?

  2. Follow the ‘money’?

That was advice I received many years ago from an accomplished campaigner and it is often what lies at the root of the issue.
