The manifestos

I’ve reviewed the environmental content of the Greens, Labour, Conservatives and Lib Dems on this blog.  The Conservative manifesto is easily, by far, the weakest on environmental issues despite the fact that President May called this election and the party has been in government for the past seven years.  I gave the Greens, Labour and LibDems all a B+ whereas  I gave the Conservative manifesto a D-.  There is a clear gap, actually a dark chasm, between the Conservatives and everyone else.

If you care about the environment then your rule of thumb must be ‘Anyone but a Tory’ when you go to vote on 8 June.

I’ll be voting Labour, Beth Miller, in my own constituency of Corby here in east Northants.

  1. I will be voting for Ian Stotesbury a scientist & environmentalist in Watford in order to defeat the Tories

  2. Here in Harrogate and Knaresborough I will be voting for Helen Flynn, we did once have a very good Liberal Democrat MP Phil Willis and Labour never has a chance here. So despite being a lifelong socialist i will be voting lib dem in the hope of loosing Andrew Jones who thinks he can be ” green” but support fracking and driven grouse shooting.

  3. I just noticed that in your review of the Tory manifesto the link actually connects to the Labour Party manifesto. (Not that this makes any difference to the validity of your assessment of the Tory propositions for the environment).

  4. Due to the horrific incident in Manchester, and the subsequent suspension of campaigning, the launch of the SNP manifesto has, understandably, been put back. However, I have written to my local candidate (Miriam Brett, Orkney and Shetland) to ask for some re-assurance as regards the SNP’s stance on wildlife protection, whether in or out of the EU, or the UK. I’ll keep you posted.

    1. Update: 01/06/17: No direct reply from our local SNP candidate, however I am somewhat reassured by the publication of the SNP manifesto. Will you be reviewing this manifesto, Mark? For balance and your Scottish readers?

  5. I’m following my head over my heart this year and will be voting Labour over green so Charlynne Pullen in North MK. Sadly until there is a fair voting system you have to pick who you would like to lose rather than who you want to see win quite often.

    1. Exactly the same here, Labour, the only party with a chance over the Tories which is very slim indeed.

  6. Unfortunately I live in one of those constituencies where ordinary poor working peole vote Tory or maybe UKIP, even though it is not in their best interests. It is a country one and in our case pheasant shooting is a big deal. I wonder if it is centuries of cap doffing to the squire that is bred into people that makes country folk vote like turkeys for Xmas. I’ll be voting Green for all the good it will do.

  7. Gerald, what a load of rubbish have you not noticed most folk living out in the country are those buggers who made a lot of money in towns then bought all these houses in the countryside so that our youngsters cannot afford to live where they were brought up.

    1. “Most Folks”!!!!! I take your point about housing though. Here they build retirement flats for people moving in from London but not social or low cost housing for the local and young people. When poled most residents put affordable housing at the top of the list of wants.

  8. Here in Argyll we don’t have a Monster Raving Loony candidate but I’ll still be voting MRLP – you know it makes sense – I’ll draw in a little loony box of my own and put a tick in it. Perhaps this will be the first MRLP candidate to get elected without actually existing. Vote Loony!
