Hen Harrier Day in the Peak District

Hen-Harrier-Day-300pxI can report some progress on arranging our Hen Harrier Day rally in the Peak District on 10 August.

I was checking out some localities the week before last, I have had helpful discussions with the Peak District National Park, the National Trust, the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, the Sheffield Wildlife Trust, the RSPB and Severn Trent Water about where and how the event should take place, and a kind donor has donated £500 towards any costs incurred.

So  – that is progress but although I had hoped to announce the venue this week I’m not quite in a position to do that today. But watch this space.

And even with the vagueness of the time and place over 70 people have registered to attend so far – fantastic!

If you will attend a peaceful rally somewhere in the Peak District, some time on 10 August, to be photographed in a crowd of people, to express your opposition to the killing of Hen Harriers then please register through this link.

  1. I happened to be in the Goyt Valley last week on the scenic route from Manchester to London. Although I saw several species I hadn’t seen in a while (including a Red Kite) the day would have been more memorable with my first summer Hen Harrier

  2. More excellent news from Langholm shows what can be achieved with a bit of co-operation. Only three miles from England.

‘Hen harrier current state is 8 active nests, 7 with hatched chicks and one which has just started incubating. The first brood is already close to fledging and chicks were rung today (15th June).

This year we are seeing an increase in hen harriers on the moor, as of mid-May we have six nesting females with four males in attendance, as well as a few others of both sexes which have not settled yet. Of the six nesting females, two are young, satellite-tagged Langholm hens from last year, known as “Hattie” and “Grainne” to followers of the Making the Most of Moorlands Blog.’
