A little Stanwick bird quiz – and there’s a prize.

Stanwick Lakes visitor centre at the end of my walk (c1015). If I had taken a photo at the beginning too (c0745) the grass and roof would both have been frosted. Home of an excellent bacon sandwich - but not for me today.

It’s mostly for fun, but the first correct answer, to be posted as a comment on this blog, will get a signed copy of either Fighting for Birds or A Message from Martha sent to them, or a lucky friend perhaps, in the post (UK addresses only).

Regular habituees of Stanwick Lakes are excluded from this competition (that’s Steve and Bob). One entry per person.  Entries close 10pm 4 December.

So, you are looking for five species of birds that I’ve seen at Stanwick Lakes since 2004, they are all very familiar or reasonably familiar species. If you have been a birder over the last decade you will probably have seen all of them.

Answers next Friday morning, 5 December.

  1. Too easy Mark.

    Crested serpent eagle.
    Swinhoe’s snipe.
    Red-faced malkoha.
    Zitting cisticola
    and…
    Lesser noddy (of course!)

Please send my prize to my winter address.
    There’s a good chap.

  2. Yay quiz time again!! I’m going for Raven, Tawny Owl, Bearded Tit, Coal Tit and House Sparrow.

  3. Based on my very comparable 156 species at the Nunnery Lakes 2009-present, I’d say the most likely ‘gaps’ are
Feral Pigeon (I hope you’re logging ’em!)
    Tawny Owl
    Coal Tit
    Marsh Tit
    Wheatear

  4. Some dodgy birds on that list Mark (Sacred Ibis, Black Kite, Merlin, etc)!!

However, comparing your Stanwick GP list with my own, I suspect your 5 are -:

    1) Feral Pigeon/Feral Rock Dove
    2) Tawny Owl
    3) Glaucous Gull
    4) Common Raven
    5) Coal Tit

  5. Feral Pigeon, Grey Partridge, Coal Tit, Tawny Owl, Osprey.

(decided not to opt for wheatear or barnacle goose (feral – yuk) but that was a tough decision.)

  6. Oops, I posted on the wrong blog. My guess: Tawny Owl, House Sparrow, Ruddy Duck, Raven and Osprey.

  7. It feels a little wrong to make my first comment on the blog a competition entry, but here goes;
Tawny owl, house sparrow, tree sparrow, coal tit and … mandarin duck?
