Win a signed copy of the new paperback Inglorious

Inglorious PB hiIt’s not a big prize, but it’s better than nothing!

Let’s see whether you can predict the number of signatures on our e-petition to ban driven grouse shooting at my bedtime on 31 July.  That will be after 10pm but might well be before midnight – although if timing is critical, because it might be a close run race, then I will give it as long as I can hold my eyes open.

To stand a chance of winning a signed copy of the new paperback edition of Inglorious leave a comment on this post by midnight on Monday 4 July with your guess.  I will publish all the ‘guesses’ at the same time so there is nothing to be gained by waiting to see what others have guessed.

Only one ‘guess’ per email address.

I’ll be interested to see your guesses. I’m really not sure what I would guess myself.

But today we passed 50,000 signatures in the campaign to ban driven grouse shooting!

Some information for you to consider:

  • progress of our first e-petition
  • progress of our second e-petition
  • progress of our current e-petition
  • Henry and I will be handing out leaflets (do they work?) asking people to sign the e-petition at events and at targetted towns through July
  • I have no speaking engagements through July
  • Henry was checking out filming locations in Yorkshire this week (see this evening’s blog) and we expect to produce some You tube videos well before the end of the month
  • thousands of leaflets will be put through letterboxes during July

  1. A quick calculation (no time to check I’m afraid, the birds are calling) puts the number we should be on by 31st July if we are to reach 100,000 by 20th September is 67976. So that’s my guess.

  2. 51000 down. I best win (soz Mark, its admittedly overdue but-), it’s about time I read your bloody book!

    1. If you are this supportive without reading ‘Inglorious’, I dread to think what you will be like afterwards!

      1. Thanks Lyn! I’ve been aware of the UK’s particular problem with raptor persecution, and the dire state of the uplands, for pretty much as long as i’ve been a birder (over three decades), but I have little doubt I could still learn a thing or two from Mark’s book. Might just wait a bit longer to see if I can get a free one though (I have submitted a guess)!

  3. Hi Mark, ever an optimist I’m going for 56k by end of July (I will keep retweeting)

  4. I guess 72,209 by bedtime 31.07.16.
Already have “Inglorious” but I’ll find a deserving case to whom to give any prize.

  5. 91,249 and that’s probably pessimistic the way things are going….I went far too low last time!
    Nick

  6. A persuasive and prime number of 62,773 signatures by the end of 31 July.

    1. Judging by the rate of the current surge, 62,773 looks like a very pleasant underestimate.

    1. Baz – a variety of things I know about, but maybe a variety of things I don’t know about! Chris Packham has been active on Twitter and Facebook – he is a star.

    2. The League Against Cruel Sports have regularly been posting on facebook and sending out emails to their members to support the petition. At the moment they are by a very, very wide margin the organisation I am most proud to be a member of. I can’t praise them enough, if the others did a quarter as much we could be at 100,000 right now I’m sure. And of course Chris P is just brilliant. Very good sign that Inglorious is now in paperback!

      1. I have to agree on all 3 counts, Les! In fact, I’m thinking of cancelling my Wildlife Trust and RSPB subs and giving the money to LACS.
One of LACS’ recent successes was lifting the lid on the practice of ‘cubbing’ – feeding live fox cubs to hounds in their kennels to sharpen their appetite for hunting foxes:

Why so many conservationists still regard the blood sports fraternity as their ‘partners and fellow stakeholders’ in conservation is a mystery to me.

  7. That was brave of Henry to go to Yorkshire to check out film locations! I will really look forward to seeing those YouTube videos. Well done in passing 50000! It took me by surprise Hope the leafleting in towns is fruitful. It could be worth taking a tablet device so people could sign it on the spot and you can show people photos. You and Henry are stars!

  8. Mark, do you have a leaflet template that could be printed off for distribution?

  9. I reckon there’ll be 69,780 signatures when you go to bed on the 31st July.
All the best to you and everyone supporting the project. See you and Henry in Rainham.
    John.

  10. Mark, congratulations to your #Team and the milestones reached, still a way to go !.

However my wild guesstimate is that I hope by the end of July, we will be at least at 70000 signs (hopefully many more – with help from our friends Natures Voice, The wildlife trust and Hawk and Owl trust).

    All the best
    Andy

  11. You and Henry running around causing trouble, brilliant! I’m sure you two will do a great job, so my guess is 97,079.

  12. Yorks Dales NP:- Leafleted East Witton; Carperby & a bit of Askrigg yesterday plus accosted some lunchers at Jervaulx Abbey tea rooms plus random ramblers & cyclists. Hope I haven’t duplicated anywhere. Bemused but well-received from face to face encounters. No abuse received so far. Even put one through letterbox at Gamekeeper’s Cottage! Probably a holiday home/let though as a lot seemed to be.

  13. I’ll go for 68,324 – if I’m wrong hope it’s because it’s a serious underestimate!

  14. Hi Mark, I think it’s going to be a glorious July – 63,800. If I’m wrong I’ll buy a signed copy at the Birdfair. Cheers, Simon.

  15. Already bought and read the book. Great read and v informative. Got to be 51798.
