Hen Harrier Day in Sheffield on Saturday

After meeting in the Derwent Valley in 2014, the #sodden570, and then assembling in the Goyt Valley in 2015, followed by a gathering in Edale last year, the Peak District area Hen Harrier Day event is slap bang in the middle of Sheffield this Saturday.

The event will be ‘chaired’ by Liz Ballard, CEO of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, and has a pretty impressive array of speakers: Natalie Bennett (former leader of the Green Party who stood for Sheffield Central in the general election), Iolo Williams (one of the very best public speakers I have ever heard), Blanaid Denman (who has been involved in the RSPB’s Hen Harrier work for years and years), Dr Ross Cameron from Sheffield University and myself.

So, I hope to see you on Devonshire Green, at 11am on Saturday – in the sunshine!

  1. I’ll be at the Dunsop Bridge event on Sunday. Sorry we won’t meet up, but every gathering counts … I hope.

  2. As Wendy says, come rain or shine the weather won’t dampen folks determination to show solidarity for a grassroots stand against #wildlifecrime that seemingly/allegedly (lol) underpins driven grouse shooting:) #spreadtheword #stopkillinghenharriers

Looking forward to hearing updates from speakers and meeting like minded, bring it on!

  3. Having an urban setting for HHD4 is a brilliant move and with luck the media will cover it much better than when it was up on the remote moors.
So now it’s the people of Sheffield, young and old, who utilise the nearby moorlands (much of it owned by the NT and the Peak Park) for their recreation who we need to swell the numbers on Saturday.
There is a vibrant environmental lobby in the city (especially active in the light of the recent tree felling) so let’s hope for a huge boisterous crowd!

  4. Looks brilliant after coming unstuck last year due to problems with public transport I have very kind lifts who should get me to and back from Loch Leven (in time for aunty and uncle’s golden wedding anniversary celebrations – maybe they can be persuaded to come?) on Saturday. Many amazing people I’m desperate to meet face to face for the first time. VERY pleased to see that Iolo is speaking at Sheffield. Possibly because he has spoken up about wader losses in the Berwyn the ‘other side’ sort of assumed he was one of theirs, ‘a real countryman, not like that Chris Packham’ – always was a bit naive of them well now after all their thumbs up they are going to get another little slap in the face when no doubt the great Welshman verbally lays into the harrier killers. Fantastic effort on part of everyone who has helped put this together – thanks!
