Tim Melling – Bearded Tit

Tim writes: This is quite a historic photograph as it is a youngster from the first ever nest of Bearded Tits in South Yorkshire.  It was taken at the RSPB Old Moor reserve near Barnsley where they encouraged the birds to nest this year using a thatched “wigwam” nestbox.   I saw two youngsters together and managed to take this photograph of a young female, identified by her dark bill (males have bright yellow bills).  You can identify it as a juvenile because of the black back and black on the outer tail.

Taken with Nikon D500 with Nikkor 300mm f4 lens plus 1.4x converter at f5.6 1/5000 second  ISO 1250
