London: a city divided on the future of grouse shooting

Map of signatures in favour of banning driven grouse shooting.
Map of signatures supporting grouse shooting

Support for intensive grouse shooting, as measured by numbers of signatures on a pro-grouse shooting e-petition, is concentrated in the richer areas of central London, such as Chelsea and Fulham, and is very sparse across the rest of the capital.  In contrast, opposition to driven grouse shooting is spread across the capital’s constituencies, with 60 out of 70 constituencies in favour of a ban (as the numbers stand at the moment).

Dominic Mitchell, London-based birder and Managing Editor of Birdwatch magazine and BirdGuides.com, says:

The negative impacts of driven grouse shooting have become alarmingly clear in recent years, and the end is surely nigh for this archaic pastime of shooting birds for fun and profit. Britain is home to most of the world’s heather moorlands but this unique ecosystem is being permanently damaged through management for shooting. Worse still, many moors have become no-go areas for iconic birds of prey like Hen Harrier and Golden Eagle, both of which have been ruthlessly persecuted on rogue estates. The time has come to ban driven grouse shooting, restore balance in the uplands, and conserve, not kill.

To join Dominic Mitchell, please sign Gavin Gamble’s e-petition which calls for a ban on driven grouse shooting.

  1. Thus far then, IF democracy was to decide it would be banned in the capital based on those bothering to vote? Bit like many elections …. including general elections, referendum, local council elections etc.

Whilst it might mirror in some respects democracy in action (or inaction in some cases) frustratingly it will be ignored by those with the cash to splash …. ?

  2. The time has come to make sure we can be confident our grandchildren can enjoy the diversity of wildlife in our country instead of the alternative which is to stand by whilst a minority systematically remove and destroy any species which they choose to do so
