The last straw?

Bought in a cafe in Idaho – a metal straw and cleaner to reduce the number of plastic straws one uses (provided you remember to take it with you).

There aren’t many circumstances where a straw is really needed, and they usually turn up in places where your drink has arrived in a plastic container too, but every little helps. And a metal straw, perhaps surprisingly, is a thing of some beauty.

  1. Nice idea, if you really need a straw.

Two groups who do sometimes have genuine need of a straw are carers with small children and people with some kinds of disabilities.

A simpler and more customer friendly solution would be for the establishment to simply keep straws on hand for anyone who requests one. Just don’t put them out for everyone to help themselves or stick them into drinks, unasked, as the default. Would probably reduce use by 99%.

But those naff plastic drinks umbrellas – they are definitely just gratuitous waste.

  2. I just wonder in terms of resources and energy how many (largely unnecessary) biodegradable paper straws could be made for every one of these (largely unnecessary) metal ones. It looks like yet another plank/mote parable in the making.

  3. Mark- I trust you are able to buy replacement straw cleaners for when the one supplied needs disposing of. I can see the plastic bristles on the one pictured will eventually fall away or become unhygienic.

Perhaps they could sell straw cleaners in a blistered 3 pack for further savings?

  4. It looks about the size of my .22 rifle barrel cleaner, and therefore should be available from any
    reputable gunsmith.
