Yesterday I sent this letter to the Prime Minister of Iceland.  The postage costs £1.25.

Dear Ms Jakobsdóttir (written by hand)

Commercial whaling in Iceland

I am writing to urge your government to take further steps to end commercial whaling in Icelandic waters.  I have watched whales in several places around the world, and would quite like to support the whale watching economy in Iceland one day, but I’d find it difficult to visit your beautiful country while harpooning of whales continues to be sanctioned in Iceland.

I know there are many countries which carry out whaling, and Iceland is now a relatively small player compared with some others, but that is why a complete end to whaling would send such a strong signal to the world, and why it would enhance Iceland’s international reputation if you were to take the next decisive step later this year.

I am not a citizen of your country and so you need take no notice of my views, but I will be watching what Iceland does on this subject, as will millions more around the world.  I hope that you make the right decisions.

Yours sincerely

Dr Mark Avery

  1. Great sound of knocking nails on the head there. I have been to Iceland and was very uncomfortable seeing whale meat and puffin on menus, so it took a while to find restaurant where I felt I wanted to eat and pay money in return (not cheap, Iceland). I also went on a whale watching trip but didn’t see any whales….I wonder why….

  2. If anyone feels a little embarrassed by writing to the Icelandic PM then you can send a standard 1st class letter to the Icelandic Embassy in London.
