Save the Gwent Levels from the Welsh Assembly Government

If Natural Resources Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government’s regulator and advisor, is against the plans to drive a motorway through the wildlife-rich Gwent Levels, then why is the Welsh Assembly Government intent on doing just that?

My mother grew up in this part of South Wales and so I have personal memories of it. And despite the fact I will be cheering on England in the game against Wales on Saturday I have a strong affection for Wales, the Welsh people, its language and its landscapes.

  1. My maternal grandparents lived on the levels at Caldicot and I remember childhood visits to the ‘moors’ fondly, especially endless skylarks and breeding lapwings. It was one of the first laces I was allowed to go off and look for nature unaccompanied. A unique place that deserves greater protection and prominence, for historical as well as ecological considerations.

  2. Towards the end of 2018, the Welsh Government seemed to be wavering in their comitment to this development. With Mark Drakeford coming in as the new First Minister, the roads lobby has recently issued a series of public statements in an attempt to win him over. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-47302907

We’ve got to respond by reminding him how irresponsible, unpopular and destructive this proposal is.
