GWCT asks about lead ammunition

The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, whose Twitter account describes themselves as…

is carrying out a poll on whether you are happy to move from toxic polluting lead shot to its non-toxic alternatives. When I first looked at this a while ago the numbers were 2:1 in favour of change but now they are practically 1:1.

  1. How can they continue to promote game as healthy if it contains toxic lead?

I wonder if the game sold by dealers and via hotels and shops in shooting areas is clearly labelled as having the potential to contain lead shot?

  2. Whilst it would be really good and for their own long term benefit if those who shoot actually willingly supported and indeed changed from lead to a non-toxic shot, might even improve their image amongst some folk. In reality they should not even have the choice government should have already banned lead shot. that they have not is a dereliction of a duty of care of those who eat game and the wider environment.
That shooters are not overwhelmingly in favour of the change says a great deal about them (negative) rather than the scientific case for change.

    1. That would be manipulation ( unless of course you actually do shoot),
I am sure no one reading this would condone such an act.

  3. The whole thing is almost certainly a recruitment / marketing device. Getting your email address is the point. There’s even a name for it ‘fugging’: ‘fundraising under the guise of…’. Regarded by many as unethical because it’s deceitful of course.

  4. Sorry if this is too tangential, but does anyone know of any companies that sells venison that is both wild and lead-free?

I’d like to avoid lead for all the usual reasons described on this blog. But I’d also like to replace some of the farmed meat in my diet for wild venison (on the understanding that that would be better in terms of environmental impact). I’ve looked in various places online and in this blog though but can’t seem to find any that’s both wild and lead-free…. Any suggestions gratefully received! Thanks

    1. Aaron C-P – Forestry England and Forestry and Land Scotland both require (almost all of) their stalkers to use non-toxic ammunition for deer culling. That is usually a good route for finding what you are looking for. And that’s the majority of meat in our freezer (where meat is quite rare these days).
