Get rid of lead ammunition from deer culling – Deer Working Group

The Working Group recommends that the Scottish Government should make a clear commitment to end the use of lead bullets to shoot deer in Scotland, carry out the necessary research and promotion to enable that change to be made after a transition period and, as a part of that, amend The Deer (Firearms, etc.) (Scotland) Order 1985 so that the specifications in paragraph 3(a) of the Order are suitable for the use of non-lead bullets.

That is the punchline and recommendation after a thoughtful analysis of the issues in this report (see pages 58-60). The report relies heavily on the enormous literature review carried out by the Lead Ammunition Group which the Westminster Government has ignored with an assiduity that only ever characterises its inactions and rarely its action.

What reason is there to continue to tolerate lead in other Scottish game meat once it goes from venison? Is the lead in a Scottish Pheasant safer than that in a Scottish Red Deer?

  1. This is good, there are already a number of organisations using or insisting those culling deer for them use copper. The reality is there is absolutely no reason to continue to use lead ammunition for anything at all and certainly not for anything entering the food chain.
