  1. Any rewilding is wonderful news, and I’m very much in favour for people to have ago, but, it is expensive, for most of the major projects you’ll need deep pockets, not only for the scheme but what is under estimated is the ongoing maintenance costs. There is this illusion that subsidies pave the way for the fulfillment of rewilding, this is a totally wrong impression and people could find themselves in financial straits because of this misbelief.
In some way I do wish that Knepp isn’t used as such a iconic beacon (it is), but significantly Knepp is a business run on business lines, market forces ditate that you can’t saturate the market with copycat businesses, they won’t survive. Secondary income is a vital resource in the continuation of a successful rewilding plan, get that right and you’re half way there. Having a solid business plan is as important as the conservation itself – you can’t be successful without one.
But, rewilding doesn’t need to be such large projects where millions are being spent, you don’t need acres of land, you can rewild small plots of lands as long as you are clear on your objectives.
It’s bloody hard work, frustrating without doubt, it seems the endless filling of a money pit, but like this week when I sleeved 100 black hairstreak eggs, totally rewarding.
Have a go, who knows you might like me even change your opinion on the conservation charities, once you have to start working with them?
