Black-browed Albatross – by Brian Leecy

There’s something about albatrosses – they are big, they are ocean wanderers and when they turn up in UK waters they are a bit lost! This bird has been around for a few weeks now and is sometimes seen at the RSPB nature reserve at Bempton Cliffs, Yorkshire.

I know a few people who’ve made multiple visits and come away without a sighting and many others who struck lucky straight away.

  1. Visited Bempton Cliffs on a fine day in Mid May this year, it was simply stunning the nesting sea birds there are just amazing. Unfortunately we arrived one day after a red back shrike had been present for a week (“you should have been here yesterday”!!) and a few days before the Black-browsed Albatross arrived.
However that did not detract from an amazing day made even better by a large colony of tree sparrows resident at RSPB Bempton Cliffs.

  2. Indeed, Alan, Bempton is a wonderful experience, even its smells are unique! Long may it continue to host its colonies of seabirds and sparrows.
