Dull day – or maybe not

There are (or were in 2014) more Bearded Tits in the UK than there have been since records began – more than 770 pairs.  That’s quite a success story and a lot of these birds nest on nature reserves. Yesterday I strolled down to my local patch of Stanwick Lakes on a dull grey day….

It’s not a gas!

Nearly three weeks ago I wrote a blog about Ecotricity‘s plans to produce gas from grass – I wasn’t very impressed by them. A few day’s ago a comment appeared on that post from Almuth Ernsting: ‘I’ve just written a short report about Ecotricity’s ‘green gas from grass’ plans for Biofuelwatch (before coming across this…

Nice crowds

I was talking about grouse shooting at a joint Dorset Bird Club and BTO conference on Saturday and to the Bedfordshire Bird Club on Tuesday evening. Both were really nice groups of people. The advantage of a conference is that you hear others speak too and I really enjoyed hearing Nick Moran on Birdtrack (great…

Techy update

I know this technical stuff is quite dull but I’d like to keep you informed of what we will call progress. As best I can tell, for most people the change in server hosting has been either neutral (wasn’t a problem before, isn’t a problem now) or positive (loads quicker, hooray!). For a few people,…

Techy stuff

As you may have read, I did some work to this site over the weekend, with some help from some nice men (they have all been men so far) in Arizona. The good news is that this site now loads noticeably faster for me, and for most of you. The bad news is…not very bad….

How ‘eco’ are Ecotricity’s plans for Green Gas Mills?

Last week Ecotricity, who supply my household electricity and gas, announced ambitious plans for Green Gas Mills which would produce gas from grass. The pitch is that green gas could replace or displace fracking (the environmentalist’s bete noir) and produce virtually carbon-free gas without affecting food production and by the way, help produce…

Website upgraded

A couple of people have mentioned that this site has been slow to load recently – and I have noticed it too (although my broadband has been a bit dodgy lately too).  So I spent half a day yesterday sorting it out through doing some stuff myself, talking to the support team at GoDaddy and…

Talking

I’m giving a couple of talks before the end of the month, and until the end of the year. Phew – it’s been a busy and exciting year. I’ve met lots of kindred spirits, been asked some good questions, been treated to some pretty good birding and fine conversations between Falmouth and Perth, and between…

Good morning America, how are you?

Those Americans who went to bed at a normal time may well be waking up around now to discover who is their new President-elect – the Trump. I woke at 05:30 UK time,  about 00:30 East Coast time, to discover that my hopes for the USA had been dashed by Americans. I wasn’t pleased, but…

See you in Norwich?

I’ll be talking about grouse shooting and appearing on a panel at the Norwich Science Festival – on Friday 28 October. 4-5pm I’ll be talking about why we should ban driven grouse shooting and then in the evening, 7:30-9pm I’ll be on a panel, chaired by Martha Kearney (below) answering your questions. It all sounds…
