Our Yorkshire Dales

Illegal pole trap set in YDNP in 2016 – wildlife crime means that you will see few birds of prey in this National Park.

You can have your say in the future of one of our wildlife crime hotspots – otherwise known as the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  This consultation is very much to be welcomed and it’s very quick to complete; if you can remember your gender, age and postcode then you can fill in 3 of the 7 questions straight away!

Authority Chairman Carl Lis explains: ‘The National Park Management Plan sets out what kind of place we’d like the National Park to be in years to come – and the steps towards achieving it. It is used to shape the policies and work of all those operating within it. As such, it is essential that a wide range of views and interests are represented and one of the ways we do this is through public consultation.

The YDNP should be a magnet for wildlife tourism but iconic species which should occur there are routinely killed.

We want to know what people think makes the National Park special, but also what concerns them and what changes they’d like to see. This could mean more employment opportunities, work to extend the network of accessible paths, planting more woodland, or action to tackle flooding.

I’d encourage everyone to take part as the results could affect your future.‘.

You might want to suggest that tackling wildlife crime is a priority for the Yorkshire Dales so that you can see some raptors when you visit the national park.  This point will almost certainly be made by others, such as Adrian Thornton-Berry of Dalesport Shooting Agency and a Moorland Association committee member, one of the members of the National Park Management Plan Steering Group.

  1. I just hope it’s not just another ‘ticking the public consultation box’ to give some sort of credence to the YDNPA’s frankly bizarre raison d’etre.
Btw I submitted my two-penneth a couple of weeks ago. Quaking in their boots I reckon!

  2. I believe Adrian Thornton-Berry’s mother, Mrs Caroline Thornton-Berry is a JP, ex- High Sheriff of Yorkshire (2004/5), Chair of YDNP Planning Committee (2015), Secretary of Mid-Dales branch of Conservative Association, Chair of Richmond Council, Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire etc etc. So you see where the power lies in the YDNP? It’s not what you know but who you know.
Having your family/friends in positions of influence is what it takes to pursue your “country sports” on your estate with impunity and make money out of them. Of course only the wealthy & well-connected can afford the time to hold all those positions. It’s a not very Secret Society!

  3. There needs to be a deterrent for any wildlife crime committed. When is a guilty criminal going to be suitably punished for taking the life of a beautiful raptor? (for instance).
A prison sentence is what is needed. Any fine is just loose change to the wealthy landowners and they probably think it is worthwhile. Their license to shoot and host shoots on their land should be taken from them.
It would take a brave judge who isn’t a shooter and is sick of the soft sentences dished out. I’m probably asking for too much, NOT!

  4. Jus so you know I indicated in the survey that land managed for the mass slaughter of grouse has no place in a real National Park.

  5. Thanks Mark for posting this, I live near YDNP but had no idea about this consultation.
I was able to make some strong submissions about rewilding, over-powerful landowners, and related wildlife crime.
