It’s Big Match fortnight

WLT Treasure Chest Appeal – save the green gold of the Caribbean.

Sierra Santa Cruz is the last unprotected rainforest in Caribbean Guatemala. From jaguars and pumas to bejewelled hummingbirds, golden bats and Critically Endangered frogs, this mountain range is a wild treasure chest.

But this rich habitat is under threat. Deforestation for Oil Palm plantations and cattle ranches has cleared the surrounding area and is now creeping up the slopes.

To put a stop to this and save Santa Cruz’s wildlife, the World Land Trust needs to raise £625,000 as quickly as possible to create a core reserve of 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares), which will be protected by a local partner organisation FUNDAECO.

Until October 18, all donations to the Treasure Chest Appeal will be doubled by the sponsors of Big Match Fortnight.

Please donate here.

I am a trustee of WLT and so am a bit biased – but they do a great job and your money will be well spent.

  1. just wish they would leave the rain forests as there are been there thousands of years were more than likely on this planet earth before us now they want destroy them and the wildlife that makes a home for them also and remember the forests rule the weather on planet earth

  2. Fine words John and I agree with you entirely. So now we should all act and make a donation (I just did).

  3. Its all our faults too that wild areas are razed for cattle, palm oil etc, etc.
If we were all to reduce consumption of meat to a level that in our generally sedentary lives is OK for our bodies and steer clear of palm oil (quite difficuly I know) that may help. But never going to happen I’m afraid.
All, very sad, I know that I shall never go to Guatemala but it would be good to know that these areas of almost pristine nature could be left in peace.

    1. I very much agree with all this – especially with your comments, Ben.
I’ve made a donation too and thanks for letting us know, Mark.
