Congratulations to Gavin Gamble! 48,090 signatures is a massive total however you look at it (and the total will creep up a little as people click on their confirmation emails this morning). We haven’t gone away – the campaign to end driven grouse shooting continues.
And thank you to all those who promoted and supported this cause. Chris Packham and Natalie Bennett deserve particular thanks but there have been many people who have gone out of their way to provide help and support.
There are some interesting aspects of these figures, and I’ll get back to them over the next few days or couple of weeks.

Very interesting to note that High Peak, together with two other nearby constituencies in Sheffield, occupy the top three places. I am currently reading “In Search of Nature’, the memoirs of the late Derek Ratcliffe. He attended Sheffield University for three years or so from 1947 and spent a lot of time on the Peak District moors. The dearth of raptors appears to have been the same then as it is today, described as follows:
‘ I was disappointed not to encounter Peregrines in the Peak. I reckoned they should be there, and examined likely cliffs, but saw nothing of them. Long afterwards I learned that a pair had nested in the years before, and that the female was shot by a keeper in the spring of 1947, just before I arrived. I had been to the very crag, in a large landslip, but it was deserted. The eggs of the dead bird were taken by a Sheffield man, Wally Gibbs, who showed me them and told me of their history. He also had a clutch from a Hen Harrier, similarly shot from its nest on the Peak heather moors. Curiously, I had fleetingly glimpsed a harrier, in that same year and same area, as this failed nesting attempt. There was never sight nor sound of Ravens or Buzzards and, if they reached the district, they did not survive long’.
This is a strong indication that the absence from the Peak of these key moorland species is nothing new.
Well done Gavin!
I now look forward to the RSPB smashing that total with their petition… or else changing their position!
