Nothing controversial here

On Tuesday evening the World Land Trust organised a second evening of Controversial Conservation. This time it involved Chris Packham, Bill Oddie, Andrew Gilruth (from GWCT), John Burton (CEO of the World Land Trust  and Garry Marvin – and me. Andrew was a bit outnumbered but he did really well – considering the sticky wicket…

A response, of a kind, from Defra

Our e-petition to ban driven grouse shooting passed 16,800 signatures yesterday. Thank you to all who have signed. Yesterday also saw Defra’s response to the e-petition – earned when the 10,000th person signed the e-petition (but it has taken a while). I’m not much impressed by the response. Are you? I’ll tell you why not…

A few updates

I’m really pleased that the Hookpods project got to its £100,000 crowd-funding target with days to spare.  That is fantastic. With these things, it is all or nothing – £99,999 would not have been enough! Thank you to all readers of this blog who contributed – I’m told by David Agombar that his Guest Blog…

Why licensing of driven grouse shooting will not work

I am grateful to the RSPB Chair, Prof Steve Ormerod for his Guest Blog on licensing of grouse shooting.  As always, the RSPB has a well thought-through position which could make a difference to the plight of the Hen Harrier. Dear Steve Thank you for your response to my open letter and it was good to see you briefly at the Bird Fair on Friday – wasn’t it fun!? And congratulations on the Skydancer project winning the Heritage Lottery Award vote in the education category.  Very good news and an indication of the high level…

In case you missed them…

Three snippets: Jim Dixon is to leave his post as Chief Executive of the Peak District National Park at the end of the year to pursue a portfolio career in writing, consultancy and non-executive directorships.  I wish Jim all the best in his new career as he is a former colleague, a nice guy and…

Right arguments – northern, rocky maths

If there were any doubt about the fact that the establishment is mobilising to defend the indefensible – driven grouse shooting – then you only have to pick up the right wing press to have your doubts dismissed. In the run-up to Hen Harrier Day and the Inglorious 12th the defenders of driven grouse shooting…
